Job Summary:

This position is responsible for the planning, direction, and coordination for the development of dry laid non-woven products for a broad range of businesses. The Engineer will work under the direct supervision of the Senior Development Engineer and closely with the Marketing Department and customers to define new grades for emerging high performance applications. This position will also work closely with Manufacturing and Engineering to develop and commercialize these grades.


Specific areas of focus will include synthetic fiber based filtration media formed from the Melt Blown Process along with other engineering synthetic fibers and bonding systems, such as Spun Bond Processing, Wet Laid Processing etc. to form advanced, high performance composites as required. Grades will be developed starting from laboratory hand sheets to in-house pilot trials to production scale qualification runs. Development work will concentrate on innovative solutions to market needs, with the ultimate goal of establishing a strong intellectual property base. Ancillary programs related to product enhancements, cost reductions, etc. will be required at times.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  1. Maintain a "Safety First" attitude in the performance of all tasks.
  2. Must be knowledgeable in the effective use of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) tools and concepts to assist in process improvements, both within Lydall, and externally at our customers/suppliers. Serve as an active participant in LSS programs that promote continuous improvement.
  3. Work with R&D and Marketing to develop products to meet customer requirements for new business opportunities.
  4. Use Lydall PM2 and project management tools when appropriate.
  5. Safely work in a laboratory environment conducting material analysis of various media on lab test equipment. 

6.     Coordinate and lead production trials of new and modified products.  Supervise Pilot scale trials when appropriate. 

7.     Draft internal and customer specs for developed products.

8.     Assist Quality Assurance in evaluating and resolving unusual, non-routine customer complaints.

9.     Provide technical assistance to Manufacturing concerning unusual, non-routine situations. 

10.  Work with Purchasing and Manufacturing in the evaluation of new sources of raw materials, product improvements and/or cost reductions.

11.  Prepare and distribute appropriate reports to document technical findings, following ISO requirements.

12.  Evaluate competitive products as needed. 

13.  Assist in the preparation of patent applications for new technologies.

Education, Experience, Skills and Abilities Required for Consideration as a Candidate:

(If a degree is required it must be from an accredited institution)

  • BS in Paper Science or Chemical Engineering required.

  • Seven years minimum of industrial experience.

  • Normal travel requirements should not exceed 20 percent.

  • Ability to work in cross-functional teams within the facility as well as throughout the company

  • Ability to organize, manage, and control workflow

  • Ability to meet deadlines despite conflicting priorities

  • Proficiency with a variety of software applications, such as Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Office

  • Strong verbal, written, analytical, presentation and interpersonal skills

  • Supervisory skills to manage at least one technician.


Additional Education, Experience, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

(If a degree is required it must be from an accredited institution)


  • The preferred candidate for this position will have a background in Melt Blown, Spun Bond, Needled Felts or other dry laid processing technology, with 10 years in web handling equipment including various forms of lamination technologies such as adhesive, thermal bonding and sonic bonding of non-woven fabrics.
  • Knowledge of Global Filtration Standards and Norms for application specific media such as Fluid Power and Automotive, Life Sciences, Commercial Industrial and Consumer.

·    Lean Six Sigma Certification

·    One to three years' experience in international business and ability to travel internationally without restriction.
