economic advisor at ICRA, an associate of
Moody’s Investors Service, and a member of
the Indian Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory
Counsel, will discuss India’s initiatives that are
in play to eliminate the country’s physical and
social infrastructure limitations. Dr. Chaudhuri will
also touch upon the geo-political risks and the
likelihood of India sustaining such remarkable
growth. Other topics include demographics
on the Indian population, domestic market
characteristics and long-term projections for the

Developments in India’s Technical
Textile Industry
Dr. J.N. Singh
Textile Commissioner
Indian Textile Ministry, India
India’s textile industry is undergoing a major
reorientation towards non-clothing applications
of textiles (technical textiles) which is expected
to grow from $6.7 billion (2005) to $12.4 billion
by 2010. Driving this incredible growth will be
the automotive, medical, agricultural, protective
apparel and geotextile industries.
The processes involved in producing technical
textiles require expensive equipment and skilled
workers. India’s Central Government has an
action plan in place to stimulate India’s technical
textile industry with its Technology Upgradation
Fund Scheme (TUFS) that provides incentives and
subsidies to help technical textile companies
manufacture sophisticated fabrics that are
competitive in the global marketplace.
The Textile Commissioner acts as the principal
technical advisor to the Indian Ministry. This
office is entrusted with the responsibility of
implementation of various regulatory orders.
Through a network of regional offices, the Textile
Commissioner carries out techno-economic
surveys and advises the Government about the
general economic health of the textile industry.
The developmental activities of the Office of the
Textile Commissioner center on planning the
growth and overall development of the textile
sector.
The Textile Commissioner also supervises
and monitors various developmental and
promotional strategies including TUFS for the
technical textile sector. Learn more about TUFS
and other government programs designed to
propel India forward as a global leader in the
technical textile industry.
