Research Program:
TRI/Princeton is an independent, non-profit research and educational organization, incorporated in New Jersey and governed by a Board of Trustees. Founded in 1930 as the Textile Research Institute by an act of US Congress to help the American textile industry stay competitive, our focus has expanded over the years to include all types of fibers and fibrous materials. We have evolved over the decades to become a full-service research and testing facility by providing domestic and international clients in industry, government, and academia with research solutions. We perform research in the areas of: surface physics and chemistry; micro- and nano-structure characterization; fluid flow in porous materials; human hair chemistry, physics & mechanics; consumer hair products and raw ingredients; human skin chemistry and product interaction; fabric wear and soiling; modeling of sorption and transport phenomena; and instrument development and design. Our services include proprietary contract research, claims substantiation, litigation support, professional education, competitive product analysis, core technology projects, instrument development, test method development, and consulting.
Educational Program:
TRI runs a variety of professional education events for members of the industrial and academic communities, such as short courses, workshops, and conferences. Recent events have included the International Conference on Applied Hair Science, the International Workshop on the Characterization of Nanoporous Materials: From Angstroms to Millimeters, the Human Hair/Cosmetic Interactions: Fundamentals & Methodology Short Course, and the Porous Materials Characterization Short Course. Post-doctoral fellows are also trained by our staff in the field of research. We also sponsor summer internships for college students and recent college graduates majoring in chemistry, chemical engineering, or similar who wish to gain “real world” laboratory experience and award the Bernard Miller Scholarship Fund for college students majoring in chemical or materials engineering with a focus on the study of porous and fibrous materials.
Facilities:
Located on the scenic shores of Lake Carnegie in Princeton, New Jersey, TRI/Princeton is housed in a large, renovated private home built at the turn of the 20 th Century. Our laboratories are equipped for research on human hair, cosmetic ingredients and products, fiber finish, fiber property quantification, electrospinning, microscopy, fluid flow adsorption and absorption, pore structure characterization, fabric integrity testing, and nonwovens examination. We also have an on-site equipment development laboratory where trained technicians conceptualize and build specialized prototype instrumentation. |
