The Department of Textiles is an integrated part of the Faculty of
Engineering of Ghent University. University education, scientific research and
technical-scientific services towards the textile industry and users are focussed
on.
Over the past years the Department of Textiles has been involved in several
industrial and government funded projects: Tempus, Tacis, Erasmus, Leonardo,
Adapt, Advottex, Meda, …; further : Brite Euram, Craft, Measurement and
Testing, International Scientific Cooperation, Copernicus, Nato, …
Research topics are : medical textiles, smart (interactive/intelligent) textiles,
soft computing, spider silk, biomimetics in textiles and a large experience in
weaving, dyeing and finishing, nonwovens, development of industrial products/systems
(H 2O 2-sensor, system for automatic assessment of carpet wear), etc.
The Head of Department is executive coordinator of AUTEX (Association of
Universities for Textiles, founded in 1994 and grouping all major European universities
offering textile education; North Carolina State University, College of Textiles
also joined the association).
The Department of Textiles is responsible for E-TEAM (European Masters in
Advanced Textile Engineering) : the programme is a two-year Master programme
in the field of textile engineering. Textile education is brought in a multidisciplinary
way and the strengths of the most renowned education specialists in the domain
of textiles are brought together. The programme is organised at different locations
and the students spend four to six months (one semester) at each university.
