The DuPont Sustainability Commitment and Its Implications for Filtration

Barry M. Granger, DuPont

Barry M. Granger is Vice President and General Manager for DuPont Nonwovens, one of the five strategic business units within DuPont's Safety & Protection Division.  In that role, Barry is leading a dynamic and multifaceted array of enterprises that are making significant contributions to DuPont's core commitment to bring innovative, science-based, safety solutions to every corner of the world.

Learn about:

  • DuPont’s commitment to Energy Sustainability.
  • DuPont’s success in their efforts to date.
  • DuPont’s goals for the future.
  • How DuPont’s goals tie specifically to filtration.

Nanotechnology/ Fine Fibers

10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Moderator: Christine Murray, PGI Nonwovens

Filtration of Nanoparticle Agglomerates and Dust Loading on Nanofiber Filters

Jing Wang, Ph.D. University of Minnesota

  • Micro- and nanofiber filter substrates were lab tested using nanoparticle agglomerates to reproduce “real life” filtering situations; filter results were examined and compared against those tested with spherical nanoparticles.
  • Nano filter performance in dust loading experiments, including pressure drop and useful lifespan, will be shared.

The Added Value Principle – A New & Unique Treatment for Enhanced Filter Performance

Yvonne Klawitter, Nanogate AG

  • Water-based solutions for enhanced filter properties. Presentation of effects like long lasting permanent electrostatic loading, easy-to-clean effects and more.
  • Higher performance of nonwovens using common application techniques like foulard or spraying.

Submicron Electrokinetic Filtration with Nano Fiber Nonwoven Media

Rodney Komlenic, Ahlstrom

  • This presentation will introduce the mechanism of electrokinetic adsorption and the retention of adsorbent powders for the enhanced removal of metals such as arsenic and lead.
  • Data will be presented regarding the benefits of using powdered activated carbon in conjunction with the nanofibers to remove volatile organic compounds and total organic compounds.
  • Several applications with supporting data will be presented to link the properties of the media to specific markets.

Air Filtration Properties of Composite Nanofiber/ Cellulose Media

Stanislav Petrik, Elmarco Ltd.

  • Learn about the influence of morphology of the nanofiber layer (fiber diameter, porosity, fiber shape) on filtration parameters of the air filtration media.
  • It will be shown that the morphology of nanofiber layer usually plays a more important role than its basis weight.
  • Some physical/geometrical values have been introduced to reflect these relationships.

Improved Filter Efficiency Through Integrated Nanofibers

Wolfgang Rupertseder, IREMA-Filter GmbH

  • In order to improve filter efficiencies suppliers for synthetic filtermedia work worldwide on reducing the size of the fibers and reach the nanoscale.
  • Typically these nanofibers are layed as single layer on the surface of the media (i.e. via "island in the sea" or "electrospinnig"). Pretty good results could be achieved so far.
  • IREMA-FILTER GmbH now developed a new process to integrate these nanofibers directly into the structure of coarse fibers. Beside a high efficient process the balance between filter efficiency, low pressure drop and long filter life time could drastically be improved as these media work as 3-dimensional depth filter.
“Our customers are here along with other companies who are looking for a substitute for what they are using already. Everything is very concentrated at this show and we can see a lot of people in very little time.”
