Air & Liquid Filtration -- Tuesday Nov 30

Air Tutorial

9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
Instructor: R. Vijayakumar, Aerfil, LLC

Filters are the key components in any system that provides clean air for applications ranging from Indoor Air Quality, Industrial Machinery and Cleanrooms. This tutorial is mainly aimed at the newcomer to the field or anyone who wishes for a refresher on basic filtration and filter design. This tutorial will address filter design and the test practices as well as test standards in vogue that ensure that filters meet the design specifications. Since filter media are the key element in any filter, an overview of media and their properties as well as common filter construction practices will be addressed.

10:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Decontamination and Reuse of Filtering Facepiece Respirators

3:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Ron Shaffer, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH),
National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL)

During a pandemic crisis, demand for disposable facemasks (N95 filtering facepiece respirators) will Filtration dramatically, increasing the likelihood of local shortages in healthcare settings. These devices are typically discarded after each patient encounter because of concerns that continued use would increase the chances that any infectious material on the respirator would be transferred to the wearer or other patients. This presentation will provide an update on NIOSH research to assess one possible strategy to reuse N95 filtering facepiece respirators through application of readily available items such as microwave ovens, ultraviolet lamps and ovens to render viral material contaminating the respirator inactive.
