Help the tornado victims in the Midwest by donating.

As the Midwest continues to assess the damage left behind by severe weather and tornadoes, we are looking to fulfill the product needs of our nonprofits active in disaster relief. Currently, we are working with our nonprofit partners on the ground in the affected areas to assess the immediate needs. Good360 has 30 years of experience distributing product donations to nonprofits working in disaster relief and recovery situations.

The road to recovery is long and needs are always changing. Submit your email address to join our Disaster Coalition and receive updates on the product needs of those organizations recovering in the Midwest and future disasters. We are collaborating with the partners on the ground to discuss the current situation and will update the list-serv as we learn more.

Herty Advanced Materials Development Center Celebrates 75th Anniversary

Did you know that the Herty Advanced Materials Development Center was established in 1938? 2013 – 1938 = 75 years of operation and innovation. They recently celebrated this milestone anniversary with a visit from Georgia Governor Nathan Deal. If you’re interested in developing synthetic nonwoven materials, ‘green’ technologies, biomass processing or alternative energies, then the Center would probably be happy to talk to you as those are areas that they are currently focusing on. On a side note, the Center is actually named after Dr. Charles H. Herty and he had quite a career as one of the early pioneers in wood chemistry.

Polymer Substance Fully Resists the Body’s Natural Attack Response to Foreign Objects

Do you know anyone who’s had a hip replacement? Perhaps a knee replacement? Or even a pacemaker put in? Then you’re probably aware that surgery isn’t the only potential worry associated with these operations. Rejection is also a huge factor with anything implanted in the human body. There is a real possibility that the implant could be coated with a protein wall (collagen) isolating it from the rest of the body (your body does this to protect itself). That presents a problem with medical devices, but perhaps sometime soon a polymer substance, being developed by researchers at the University of Washington, could prevent rejection or being surrounded with a protein wall. Very cool.

Russia’s Nonwovens Market on the Verge of Big Changes

Acquisitions and mergers. It seems like you hear about a new one every day and sometimes it appears to be coming from out of left field. Even Russia has their share of acquisitions and the latest shakeup comes from NKK, one of the largest petrochemical producers in the world, and their upcoming acquisition of Polymatiz, a nonwoven producer. There looks to be growth potential in nonwovens for the Russian region and NKK is positioning itself to take advantage of that growth.

Natural Plastic from Shrimp Shells?

Did you know that about two-thirds of global packaging is used in the food industry? A lot of that packaging isn’t biodegradable, but if researchers in the European Union have their way more packaging could be biodegradable thanks to shrimp. Yes, shrimp. Chitin and chitosan from shrimp shells are being researched and turned into bio-based fibers that can then be used to create biodegradable packaging. So, in the future, food items might just be a little more earth-friendly with containers not ending up in landfills for generations to come. Perhaps there would be other applications too for these bio-based fibers?

Fiberweb Announces $15 Million Expansion

Anyone around Old Hickory, Tennessee on May 17 might see some extra activity around Fiberweb’s facility. They announced at IDEA13 that they are going to have a ground breaking ceremony for their huge expansion plans – building a state-of-the-art R&D facility. This investment is in addition to their plans for a shale-gas powered utility plant. Fiberweb is demonstrating that they are truly serious about becoming a leader in technology.
