Incontinence: Urinary and the Other

The Scoop on Poop: Self-Management of Accidental Bowel Leakage

Although absorbent products can be effective for containment of urinary leakage, accidental bowel leakage can be more difficult to contain due to numerous factors, such as stool consistency, smell, and volume issues. In this talk, we will review current over-the-counter products including absorbency products, stool consistency management, dietary supplements, and anal plugs. Newer products, such as anal inserts and vaginal bowel control systems will be introduced to the group. Lastly, we will discuss the impact of leakage on perineal skin changes and skin protective products. This lecture will provide a comprehensive review of current products used to manage accidental bowel leakage with emphasis on differences compared to products used for urinary incontinence management.
