Larry WadsworthSignificant Accomplishments of Dr. Larry Wadsworth

Larry Wadsworth has BS and PhD from NC State University in Textile Chemistry and Fiber & Polymer Science.

He spent about seven years working at Nonwoven companies, Surgikos, Kendall and Chicopee.

Since 1981, he has been at the University of Tennessee, conducting nonwovens related research, teaching and providing service to nonwoven industries. Although he retired in 2007, as an Emeritus Professor, and consultant to companies, he continues to contribute to the field of Nonwovens.

Larry has been very actively involved in INDA activities at least since 1990. He has been a TAB member, member of INDA conference organizing committees, and has been in the editorial board of Nonwovens Journal (JNR, INJ and now JEFF).  He has actively participated in INDA Conferences as presenter, tutorial organizer and speaker, and organizer moderator of many sessions.

He has held many positions in the TAPPI Nonwovens division as well, and currently, he is the Chair of the Nonwovens division.

His research accomplishments include:

  • Received major grant from Exxon Chemical Company in 1983 for installation and staffing of a melt blown nonwoven pilot line making The University of Tennessee the only university in the world for over ten years with a melt blown R&D Center
  • Received grant of $895,000 in 1989 from Exxon Chemical Company to build the Textiles and   Nonwovens and Nonwovens Development Center (TANDEC)
  • Founder and Director of TANDEC from 1990-1997; established the Corporate TANDEC   Membership Consortium which grew to over 16 members by 2001
  • Obtained research grants in excess of $8 million; equipment donation grants of $5.5 million; and   has over 50 refereed journal publications, 150 conference papers, 30 patents and a textbook with Oldrich Jirsak titled Nonwoven Textiles
  • Selected as Alumni Distinguished Service Professor in 1992, one of 25 at UT
  • Recipient of the 1993 TAPPI Nonwovens Technical Achievement Award
  • Obtained the first patent for the ambient temperature electrostatic charging of filter media in   1983, assigned to Surgikos, A Johnson and Johnson Company
  • In 1995 and 1997, obtained two patents in cooperation with Dr. Peter Tsai, TANDEC Research Associate Professor, for a novel ambient electrostatic charging technology, assigned to The University of Tennessee Research Foundation (UTRF), which has been licensed to over 15 companies world-wide, generating royalty income of over $923,000 to UTRF
  • From 1993, obtained nine patents on Stretchable Webs in cooperation with Dr. Charles B. Hassenboehler, TANDEC Research Assistant Professor, from 1993-2001 with over $789,400 in royalties to UTRF from multiple licensees internationally

Larry Wadsworth’s contributions are recognized and respected both in industry and academia and he certainly deserves this recognition, especially for his contributions to INDA and its member companies.
