SEE WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

Spunbond Technology Course
The Nonwovens Institute (NWI) & North Carolina State University

An in-depth experience for nonwovens professionals
Class Dates:
September 22 - 24, 2026

The Spunbond Technology Course combines classroom learning with hands-on activities in NWI's state-of-the-art fabrication and testing labs to provide attendees a fundamental understanding of the process of forming spunbond webs. The course focuses on the importance of controlling structure-property-process relationships to optimize spunbond materials to meet the requirements of the application. The course will cover model polymers, such as PP, as well as the use of alternative polymers (PET, PLA, PBS, etc.), providing attendees an "algorithm" for running an efficient spunbond process based on polymer properties.

Upon completing the course, attendees will have a comprehensive grasp on spunbond nonwoven production processes, including raw material selection, basic science knowledge, testing, and the characterization used to create end-use products. Attendees will also understand the important connection between thermal profiles and extrusion (i.e., min/max temperatures) to optimize the process.

  • A primer on nonwoven markets and applications for spunbond technology
  • An in-depth understanding of polymer characterization and fiber formation
  • Discussion of bicomponent fibers and bonding technologies
  • Discussion of web uniformity and inspection
  • Discussion of product evaluation and testing
  • A pack design and cleaning demonstration
  • Discussion of process variables and hands-on activities in NWI's world-class Spunbond and Hydroentangling Lab
  • Cost modeling for various spunbond process scenarios

If you attend this course, you will:

  • Learn how to exploit machine design and raw materials to optimize the efficiency of your process and improve the quality of end products.
  • Get expert insight into nonwoven markets and applications for spunbond technology, including how to leverage biopolymers for sustainable impacts.
  • Gain insight into the nonwoven fabrics industry and the significant role spunbond materials play in the world today.

Who should attend?

  • Business and Product Development
  • Manufacturing and Engineering
  • Quality Control
