Clean Air Best Practice in Commercial Buildings and Other Facilities

Harry Allen is Vice President of Sales and Marketing at AllergyZone, LLC, a privately owned company in Louisville, KY with a focus on providing breathing solutions that bring relief to people, especially those who suffer from allergy and asthma symptoms, through scientifically developed products that create a healthier personal environment and improved air quality.  He has been a member of the National Air Filtration Association (NAFA) and has served on numerous Committees and Task Groups.  Harry is a NAFA Certified Air Filtration Specialist (CAFS), Treasurer of NAFA and a member of NAFA’s Executive Board.    His involvement in the air filtration industry spans 33 years, having worked for several filter manufacturing companies, primarily in a Sales and Marketing capacity.  Harry’s experience includes working with leading HVAC equipment manufacturers as well as air filtration for residential, commercial and industrial HVAC applications.  When not working, Harry enjoys spending time with his family and four grand children, golf and college athletics, especially football and basketball.  

 

BhatGajanan S. Bhat Professor - Materials Science and Engineering Director - UTNRL

Meltblown Submicron Fibers for Tomorrow’s Sustainable Filter Media

After earning his MS and Ph.D. from Georgia Tech in textile and polymer engineering, Dr. Bhat accepted a position at Image Carpets, Rome, GA where he helped improve the process of converting recycled PET into fibers for carpets. He then joined the University of Tennessee, in August 1990, where his research covers nonwovens - melt blown, spunbonded and biodegradable, plastics recycling, sustainable materials, and high performance fibers.  He has also conducted research at Edwards Air Force Base, CA on specialty fibers, and NASA/MSFC on multifunctional composites. As the director of the University of Tennessee Nonwovens Research laboratory (UTNRL) he has focused on production of nanofibers from thermoplastic polymers by the meltblowing process. In addition to mentoring several masters and doctoral students, Dr. Bhat has published about 200 papers and has three US Patents.  In recognition of his achievements, he was inducted as an Outstanding Young Engineering Alumni by the College of Engineering at Georgia Tech in 1996; received the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Fiber Society in 1999; in 2005, he was elected as a Fellow of the Textile Institute, and in 2008, he received the TechniTex India Research Achievement Award. He has served as the president of the Fiber Society and is an active member of INDA, TAPPI and the Textile Institute.

Relevance of Filtration Processes in Solid-liquid Separation

Abdoulaye “Ablo” Doucouré is a senior research scientist at Hollingsworth & Vose (H&V - Floyd, Virginia), a global manufacturer of engineered papers and non-woven materials for the filtration industry headquartered near Boston, MA. Before joining H&V’s Advanced Technology Group in January 2011, he had worked for twelve years in the membrane research division of Pall Corporation (Port Washington, NY) and held multiple functions involving the development of polymeric membranes for liquid filtration applications. Ablo Doucouré’s key contributions are in the field of liquid filtration processes, new membrane formation, thin film formulation and surface treatment of polymers. He conducted 2 years of post-doctoral fellowship in the Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Minnesota in 1996/97, and earned a doctorate in Materials Chemistry in 1995, from the university of Montpellier-2 (France). During the same year, he received a national distinction in science from the Marcel Bleunstein-Blanchet “Fondation pour la Vocation”. Dr Doucouré is the first inventor of a Pall Corporation patent and has written more than 25 technical publications. He co-founded the Mali Symposium on Applied Sciences (MSAS, http://www.msas.maliwatch.org/), which is biannually held in West Africa since 2000. He has also been teaching membrane science courses at the “Faculté des Science & techniques de Bamako” in Mali since 2006.

Judith Murawski has worked in the Air Safety, Health, and Security Department for the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA-CWA) labor union since 1999. She
won’t leave her position with AFA until the outside air on aircraft is properly filtered fleet-wide. Judith works primarily on chemical exposures hazards in the cabin and flight deck on commercial aircraft, including oil fumes, contaminated uniforms, and pesticides.  In her past life, she researched chemical exposure hazards in the pulp and paper industry. She has a Master of Science in Industrial Hygiene from the University of British Columbia and has been certified with the American Board of Industrial Hygiene since 2000. She lives in Seattle, but is looking forward to eating a real bagel in Philadelphia.

Dr. Stanfel is Director of Engineering, North America, for Freudenberg Filtration Technologies, L.P.  She has held development or production management roles in filtration and nonwoven manufacturing for the duration of her career.  Most recently, she served as Chief Engineer, Global Media Development for Parker Hannifin, Racor Division.  Earlier, as Project Manager for Ahlstrom, she was responsible for the successful development and commercialization of patented diesel fuel-water coalescence media capable of reliable performance in current market fuels.  She began her career with EXXON Chemical Company formulating diesel lubricant additive packages for improved filterability.
Christine is a member of the SAE Filter Test Methods Committee and US Technical Advisory Group to ISO Technical Committee (TC) 22 (Road Vehicles).  She is Secretary of ISO TC 142 (Cleaning Equipment for Air) WG 6, and US Expert for ISO TC 22 and TC 142.

Al Veeck is Executive Director of the National Air Filtration Association headquartered in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Al is a graduate of Butler University with a degree in Business Adm.  He began his 3rd career in the air filtration business in 1985 with Tidewater Air Filter and in 1998, became General Manager of Airpure Filter Sales & Service.

While with Tidewater, Al served as president of the National Air Filtration Association (NAFA) and served on the committee that wrote the first book on air filtration, NAFA Guide to Air Filtration. He was part of the first group of NAFA members to pass the national accreditation exam to become a NAFA Certified Air Filter Specialist (CAFS).  In 2002, he retired from Airpure and with prior experience in association work Al accepted the directorship of NAFA.

Al continues to be involved in many phases of service in the HVAC industry including ASHRAE where he is a member of TC2.4, “Particulate Contaminants and Particulate Contaminant Removal Equipment.”  In 2004, Al was selected by the ASHRAE Board of Directors as a Distinguished Lecturer speaking on air filtration applications and Standard 52.2.

Vijayakumar is the founder and head of AERFIL, a consulting company devoted to providing technical and business solutions and services for the filtration and contamination control industry as well as educational and training support for the industry. His current clients include major filtration companies in China, Brazil and India. With over over 25 yearsʼ experience in leading filtration companies to go with his PhD in particle technology, Vijayakumar is a globally recognized expert and mentor in filtration sought after by clients world wide. He is an advisor to NASA for air filtration systems. In keeping with his philosophy that knowledge grows only by sharing, he teaches freely and often wherever someone wants to learn the subject. He has been on the faculty of the short course on air and gas filtration at the University of Minnesota since its inception. Currently, he chairs standards development committees at the ISO and in the US.

Phil Winters is the Director of Product Development for Filtration Group LLC.  He has worked in the HVAC and Contamination Control industries for over 20 years.  Phil has Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Engineering.  He has authored a number of technical papers on air filtration and has made numerous presentations on filtration and associated testing issues.  He is actively involved in several Technical Committees within ASHRAE and is a past Chair of TC 2.4.  Phil is also actively involved in ISO/TC142 (Cleaning Equipment for Air and Other Gases), both as a US Expert on several Committees and as the past Chair of the US Technical Advisory Group.  He is a licensed Professional Engineer within the State of Illinois and a NAFA Certified Air Filtration Specialist.

Chris has spent the last eighteen years in the air filtration industry, sixteen of which with Glasfloss Industries, a nationally recognized HVAC air filter manufacturer.  He is currently the National Sales Manager for Glasfloss Industries.

Professional Achievements:  Zaker became a National Air Filtration Association (NAFA) Certified Air Filter Specialist in 1995.  He was NAFA’s Clean Air Award Committee Chairman from 1998 until 2002, after which he remained active on the committee.  Chris has been NAFA’s spokesman to ASHRAE for the past seven years as the presenter of NAFA’s Technology of Clean Air PowerPoint presentation at the annual AHR Expo.  Chris has delivered three presentations to NAFA on the topics of air filtration and the life cycle costing of air filtration.  Chris has delivered dozens of presentations on the importance of proper air filtration to business organizations, school administrators, healthcare facilities, and universities.  Zaker was on NAFA’s Technical Committee which published the NAFA Installation, Operations & Maintenance (IOM) Manual, 2nd edition in 2006.  In September, 2006, Zaker was the first Associate Member of NAFA to earn both the CAFS & NCT designations by passing the NCT exam.  Chris was the President of NAFA’s Associate Council, the association of air filter manufacturers within NAFA, from April 2006 to April 2007, which culminated with his directing NAFA’s Technical Seminar with his infamous “Tool Belt Speech” in April, 2007.  Chris became officially recognized as a “NAFA Distinguished Lecturer” in September, 2007.  Zaker was a member of the Technical Committee which published the NAFA Guide to Air Filtration, 4th Edition in January, 2008.  In September, 2008 Zaker was one of only five people to receive the “NAFA Distinguished Service Award” in the inaugural year of this award.  Chris has been on the NAFA Board of Directors since 2009 and in August 2011 he was voted onto the Executive Committee and is currently the Treasurer of NAFA.

Personal/Family: Chris resides in Lancaster, Ohio with his wife of 20 + years, Trisha and their three daughters; 10 year old twins Cassidy & Haley, and 8 year old Alison.  When not talking about NAFA or air filters, Chris can usually be found on Ohio softball diamonds coaching a girls travel fastpitch softball team.
